The Project

Summary:
Since 2017 the insurance mile on the Zurich Mythenquai has been undergoing complete reconstruction, including the headquarters of the Zurich-Versicherungs-Gesellschaft AG (Quai Zurich). MEVA was responsible for the planning and use of the MT 60 shoring tower in the auditorium of the new building – a major feat in every respect.

Under the direction of the Viennese architect Adolf Krischanitz, a modern building with a large glass façade is being added to the historical building ensemble to connect the three listed buildings with each other. His approach: “The goal is to accentuate the visual impact of the new construction between the old buildings, especially towards the lake, through the positioning of the building structures as well as the façades. The centrepiece of this new building is the auditorium.

The Solution

1. Box-outs and concrete beams were the challenge
   “Besides the ceiling with a height of more than 7 m, the planned box-outs and concrete beams in the upper section of the building were our main challenge during the planning and implementation,” explains Raphael Klauser from MEVA Schalungs-Systeme AG based in the Swiss town of Seon. Thus, the MT 60 shoring tower supported not only the slabs including formwork but also the concrete beams. The MEVA structural engineers calculated the loads. The 7 kN/m² for the slab formwork was no problem at all for the MT 60. The concrete beams with the box-outs resulted in values of 23.75 kN per RM. Klauser: “It was thus necessary to create a very sturdy shoring tower to take up the calculated loads.”
    
2. Space-saving and simple assembly
   With a load capacity of 60 kN per leg, the modular MT 60 shoring tower system was the first choice for the project. It allowed the construction project to be planned smoothly. Max Mahler, site manager for contactor Frutiger AG Zürich, was completely satisfied with the safety and flexibility. Another advantage of the system was the space-saving and simple assembly on the spot. Additional outstanding feature: It was possible to pre-assemble the entire shoring tower on the ground without tools. All bolts and pins are integrated into the system. The delivery, assembly and use of the MT 60 was thus performed according to the just-in-time method within the planned construction schedule.
